A relatively new term, geomatics was originally coined in Canada about 40 years ago to better define the broad range of activities conducted by today’s Land Information Professionals. Adopted officially by the ISO (International Organisation for Standardization) in 1996 it refers to the process of gathering spatially referenced data, it’s verification, indexing, manipulation, modeling, storage and portrayal in the form of digital or hardcopy maps, drawings or plans for use by others either as stand alone results or as the framework upon which to construct their own products or applications.
